What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of skin cells, often caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. While it is the most common type of cancer, it’s also one of the most treatable when detected early. The three main types of skin cancer are:

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC)

The most frequently diagnosed and least aggressive form of skin cancer. It typically grows slowly and is highly treatable when caught early.

Melanoma

The most serious form, known for spreading quickly if not caught early.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)

A common form of skin cancer that can grow deeper into the skin and may spread if not treated promptly.

Symptoms of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer can take many forms, but early detection is always vital to effective treatment. Common warning signs include:

  • A new growth or sore that doesn’t heal
  • A mole that changes in size, shape, or color
  • A spot or bump that looks shiny, waxy, scaly or crusty
  • A mole with irregular borders or multiple colors
  • Itching, bleeding, or tenderness in a skin lesion

The ABC’s of Melanoma

Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer, but early detection can help mitigate risks and improve treatment options.
